While the populations of Malaga concentrate themselves in precoastal agricultural zones, after disappearing in the coastline, the chameleons of Cadiz and Huelva appear bound to the coastal habitats, not transformed more, of pine groves and retamares. For all the population centers main the threat continues being the disappearance of habitats due to the advance of the urbanizing process, that brings about the destruction of the puttings by earthworks, the deterioration of the vegetation and frequent upsettings in ways and highways. Besides it, the illegal sale of unit to tourists is frequent. However, the chameleon has also demonstrated its capacity to adapt to already built-up zones, especially in those cases in that the constructions have not implied great transformations and have considered the preventive measures for the protection of the species. Their main nuclei are in the agricultural boulevards of the Axarqua, associated the almonds tree, olive trees and vines.
In outlying areas of the East of the Malagan capital like the Wood, important nuclei associated to kitchen gardens and gardens are registered. In its zones of Malagan distribution, the chameleon presents/displays a strong nourishing dependency with respect to polillas of the almond tree, which inspires a strong protectionistic feeling on the part of the agriculturists. In the province of Granada the presence of the chameleon is reduced to a small zone around Almuecar. Unlike which it happens in Malaga, the distribution of the chameleon is limited in Cadiz the coastal strip. The limits of the different nuclei settle down between Sanlcar de Barrameda and Chiclana, with a presence closely ligature a the pine groves and retamares. In the province of Huelva the chameleon occupies the coastal strip included between Island Cristina and Mazagn, as well as several points in the zone of Doana.
The population of chameleons in Huelva is conditional by the existence of barriers like the salt marshes of Island Cristina or the rivers Piedra and Odiel. Finally, the colonies of the Algarve reduced to a small coastal strip in the zone of Real Vila of San Antonio, have their origin in diverse introductions with units coming from Huelva, that have adapted with great success to a habitat of pine groves in excellent state of conservation. Malaga welcomes from year 1995 the first disciplinary center and raises in captivity of the chameleon, start up by the Institute of Ecological Investigations and the Council of Environment. This center is a key piece for the conservation of this valuable species in extinction danger.
